Levelling up Bay Sports Facilities

The team at Swansea Bay Sports Park are delighted with how recent projects have turned out and feel each in turn have added real value to the facility offering, with the jewel being the brand-new Gym annexe on Bay Campus – adding a state-of-the-art Strength and Conditioning facility that is accessible to all members completely transforms the University’s gym provision!

The initial HEFCW grant for the new facilities on Bay was £1.5m and all works were completed within 12 months:

  • The first project, the new MUGA, got underway in January 2022, and was handed over in April 2022.
  • The Multi-Purpose room was completed and handed over in September 2022
  • The Gym Trail works were completed in November/December 2022
  • The Gym Annexe works began in June 2022, and were completed January 2023

MUGA

The new MUGA represents a significant upgrade on the single basketball hoop that Bay Campus previously had. The MUGA provides a full size, enclosed and floodlit basketball/netball court – all of which is free to use for ad hoc / walk ins, the same as before.

Multi-Purpose Room

The Multi-Purpose room is a fantastic addition to the Swansea Bay Sports Park facilities. With a ‘light and airy’ feel to the space, and terrific outlook, the room lends itself perfectly to a holistic space. This will also prove useful for other purposes, such as a meeting space, testing, video analysis and more.

Gym Trail

Located in a relatively secluded part of campus, the Gym Trail provides an ideal setting for individuals looking to train outdoors, or away from the indoor gym environment. With 7 stations available, and a whole range of exercises possible, the training options are vast.

The new gym trail has seven stations in total:

  • Sit Up Bench
  • Triple Pullup Bar
  • Parallel Bars
  • Overhead Ladder
  • Dips/Leg Raise
  • Plyo Boxes
  • Active Rig

Each item has been coated with a coastal spec for anti-rust to improve their durability, which is crucial when exposed to the unpredictable elements at Bay on times!

Bay Gym Annexe

The new Bay gym annexe is an air-conditioned state-of-the-art strength and conditioning facility, which all students can access regardless of their sporting calibre. The Bay gym annexe has more than doubled the floor space of the gym, and vastly improved our offering in terms of both facilities and equipment available.

The annexe has 4 x full racks, 4 x lifting platforms, and 3 x half racks (offering 11 workstations). All stations have access to bumper plates or calibrated plates and a selection of barbells for Olympic/Powerlifting.

There is an Astro turf strip for sleds/prowlers, belt squat machine, reverse hyper machine, as well as conditioning equipment such as 2 x rowers, 2 x ski ergs and 2 x assault bikes, battle ropes, kettlebells.

The ‘L’ Gym has seen a significant make over tripling the size of the dumbbell area and increasing the selection of dumbbells from 2.5kg-60kg in 2.5kg increments. It now also offers all the centres resistance machines. The Cardio room has received a new treadmill, three-Watt Bike Atoms and has tripled the size of the stretching area.

If you haven’t had a chance to explore the Bay Campus sports facilities, now’s your chance.
