Us regular gym goers know what it’s like to sometimes lose momentum because we no longer find the gym exciting. So we’re here to help you reignite that passion for going to the gym – if you want to find out how to keep the gym exciting, read our tips below.

1. Don’t compare yourself to others

It’s easy to compare yourself to others, especially in a gym environment, but if this becomes a habit, it can easily get you down. The way you speak to yourself has a huge impact on your self-image. When you wake up each morning, say something kind to yourself. This might be easier said than done and doesn’t have to be about looks, it can be about anything. Are you proud of the time you woke up this morning? the fact you always smile at people you pass? the way you look after your skin? the list goes on. It’s important to remember that you’re doing the best you can, and consistency is key!

2. Work out with friends

Whilst some people prefer solo gym sessions, exercising with a partner or group of friends can be fun. You might end up releasing more feel-good endorphins than when you work out on your own. We have plenty of classes for you to attend with people you want to exercise with, whether that’s Evolve Cycle, HIIT, Yoga or Pilates, or you can just invite people to join your usual gym session. We have the perfect layout for group sessions in both of our gyms and big mirrors to take group selfies! Top tip for hitting the gym with friends: make sure they will motivate you and keep things positive!

3. Find a workout that works for your personality

Sometimes it’s hard to find a workout routine that works for you. If you can’t find a programme you like, why not start by considering your likes and dislikes. For example, do you prefer going to the gym with a friend, family member or colleague, or do you prefer exercising alone? What sort of exercises do you like – do you like fast-paced workouts such as our HIIT classes, or would you prefer to take things slower with a swim in the Wales National Pool?

If you find it takes a while to delve into your likes and dislikes, don’t forget you can arrange for an informal look around our gyms and we’ll be more than happy to chat with you about suitable workout programmes. If this sounds like your cup of tea, don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of the team.

4. Take advantage of your strengths

Whether you’re at home, work or the gym, most people generally like to do things that they’re good at. Perhaps you’re less interested in trying things that don’t feel like they come naturally. Maybe you’ll exercise more often if you’re confident in your ability. For instance, if you feel like you ‘don’t have rhythm’, maybe you never want to dance. Whereas, if you have a lot of strength, weights are probably your thing. Take advantage of your strengths as this will keep the gym exciting for you, and don’t forget to do things for fun as well – life is way too short for taking things seriously!

5. See exercise as a reward on your good and bad days

Seeing exercise as a reward can take time. By this we mean, don’t see exercise as a punishment for ‘not being on track’ or having ‘one bad weekend’ – there is no such thing a bad weekend, a healthy lifestyle is all about balance. Plus, you will keep the gym exciting by seeing it as a reward. Had a mentally challenging day? Hit the gym and release those endorphins. Had a good day and want to feel even better? Hit the gym and finish your day on a high. Changing your mindset towards going to the gym will help keep things fresh and exciting for you.

6. Crank up the tunes

This might be the easiest way to give your workouts an instant boost. We can’t be the only ones who find the gym more enjoyable with music. It’s fun, especially if the music is fast-paced and boosts your mood and energy levels! Search for “160 bpm” or “180 bpm” on Spotify to find songs that fit the bill – this is great if you want something to match your running pace. Or if you’re planning a chill session and need a playlist of your own, why not search for a motivational meditation?

7. Mix things up

Even after you find a workout you enjoy, it’s still important to regularly change things up to keep the gym exciting. Whether that means trying new machines in the gym, such as rowing instead of the stair master, upping your weights, or doing circuits, there’s less chance you’ll get bored. More variety often means more enjoyment, so don’t be afraid to introduce variety into your routine as much as possible and hopefully this makes the gym exciting for you!
